PS2 Mod Chips & XBox Mod Chips

What are Mod Chips?
The Mod Chip (also known as an Upgrade Device by other people) is an electronic device that is added to the PlayStation, PS One, PS2 or XBox machine - modifying it to boot up all CDs. It allows you to play import games and much more. During the Boot sequence the machine checks the Boot Information on the disk. Import Games show a foreign one. The Mod Chip injects the correct boot information.

    Playstation 2 - PS2 Version Guide

On the rear of your PS2 Console, you will find a sticker similar to the one below. The number next to the SCPH code is your PS2 Console model number. This is used to determine which version of PS2 Console you have.

    label.jpg

    PS2 Console - Version 9 Indentification

If your PS2 Console is a Satin Silver PS2 or it has the built in Infrared Reciever (between the Reset and Eject buttons) then you have a Version 9 PS2 Console.

    PS2 Console - Version 7 Indentification

If your PS2 Console model number is any of the below, then it a Version 7 PS2 Console main board.

    SCPH : 39000 • 39001 • 39002 • 39003 • 39004 • 37000

    PS2 Console - Version 5 & Version 6 Identification

The Version 5 & 6 PS2 Consoles are a little trickier to distinguish between. The model number tends to have a letter "R" after it, although this isnt always the case.

    The model numbers can be:

    SCPH : 30000R • 30001R • 30002R • 30003R • 30004R • 30006R

Its also possible that any of the SCPH numbers above may have a PS2 Console V6 or V6 board, even without the "R"

To check this further, pop out your Expansion Slot cover on the rear of the PS2 Console and check the diagram below

    v5screw.jpg

    Fig 2

If your PS2 console has the screw like in the diagram, then you have a Version 5 / Version 6 PS2 mainboard.

If your PS2 consoles doesnt have the screw, then its either a newer Version 7 PS2 or an older V1-V4 PS2 mainboard.

So, it is a Version 5 or Version 6 PS2 Console?

Once you have established that it is a Version 5 / Version 6 PS2 console, now you need to know which of these it is. And, unfortunately, the only way to tell the difference between a Version 5 and a Version 6 is to open the PS2 case and compare the connector as in the diagram below

    v5_or_v6_ps2.jpg

    Fig 3

    PS2 Console - Version 4 Identification

If your PS2 Console model number is any of the below, then it a Version 4 PS2 Console mainboard.

    SCPH : 30000 • 30001 • 35001 • 30002 • 35002 • 30003 • 35003 • 30004 • 35004

There is also a slight possibility that the numbers above COULD have a Version 5 or Version 6 mainboard. To check this, pop out your Expansion Slot cover on the rear of the PS2 Console and check the diagram above (fig 2).

If there is no screw in the Expansion Slot then turn your PS2 Console over and take a look at the underside of the PS2 case. If there is a "Electrical Hazard Warning" sign on the bottom (see fig 4), then its a Version 4 PS2 mianboard.

    PS2 Console - Version 1, 2 & 3 Identification

The first check you should really make, is to establish whether you have a Version 1, 2 or 3 PS2 Console or whether its a Version 4, 5, 6 or 7 PS2 Console. To do this is very simple. Turn your PS2 upside down and take a look at the bottom of the case. You will see little square "tabs" where the case screws are concealed. Four of these "tabs" are made from rubber to double as the PS2 Consoles rubber feet. By simply counting this screws, you can establish whether you have a version 1-3 or a version 4-7 PS2 console like below:

If you counted 10 screws (fig5), you have a version 1, 2 or 3 PS2. To narrow down which model you have, see the further instructions on this page.

    Fig 5

If you counted 8 screws (fig6), you have a version 4, 5, 6 or 7 PS2. Again, to narrow down which model you have, see the further instructions on this page.
